We buy this stuff all the time, now I will grow Mesclun instead.
My first attempt at growing Mesclun. Mesclun is a variety of leaf lettuces that you cut while young, but you don’t cut the whole plant just the outside leaves. Cutting just the outer leaves saves the heart of the plant so that the lettuces can re-grow to be harvested again. I should be able to get 3 or 4 harvests from one tray.
I am excited about this and I think my wife will be too once she realizes what I am up to. We spend roughly $20 – $30 dollars on lettuce a month and the seed package was $4. This could be a significant saving.
I will start another tray in about a month and I already told Siri to remind me. From what I read we can also grow this indoors, but I think I can get a couple trays of lettuce harvested before I need to do that.
Instructions for growing Mesclun
I followed these instructions for growing salad leaves in seed trays. It’s an older video but the quality is good and the content is easy to understand.
I will continue to experiment with lettuce until I can get it right. I am hopeful and looking forward to lots of salad. Hey! I got some seeds in the dirt today. This makes me happy.
a salad made from a selection of lettuces with other edible leaves such as dandelion greens, mustard greens, and radicchio.
