So as you can see, I have done quite a bit of weeding to the main garden area. I even have some plants in the dirt. Hooray!!!
I moved the climbing contraption over to my small plot and have snap peas and green beans growing underneath. It will be fun to watch them as they start climbing it. I also have some type of melon, a patty pan, some cauliflower, and a couple tomato clipping I am hoping will take.
In the right of the photo, you can see the big pile of weeds. That is only about 1/4 of the weeds that I had to clear. This weed pile is full of weed seed. I am not sure my skills are good enough to compost this pile, so it may need to go into green waste. If you have ideas on what to do with very seedy weed waste leave a comment.
Progress is being made, slowly but progress none the less.
So this is the garden area I am working with as of June 2017. As you can see it has been neglected for awhile. My first tasks are to weed the entire area and get a small 15′ x 15′ area ready for the first planting.
This area of the garden is looking south. You can see the potting tables to the right and in the back of the photo where that squash plant is the compost area. Behind the compost area is a stack of wood that has been covered in weeds. All this needs to be cleared out.
Next to the potting table is our fire-pit with more wood piles. We have way more wood than we know what to do with. Eventually, we will clean this area up and make it more hospitable.
The turkey coop is west of the fire-pit. Right now there is an apricot and a pluot tree. I am not quite sure what to do here yet. Maybe some edible bushes or some container gardening.
The path to the garden is also in need of some help. The retaining wall is failing and I think this area is also ripe for some growing love. In the upper right corner is my home.
This is directly North of the main garden. I plan to turn this into a spiral herb garden. Those bricks are for the base.
In all honesty this is a shared garden within my community. I will not be taking up the entire space, but if no one takes interest I will. I expect once I have the area all cleared other community members will come down and take claim to an area. Which I hope they do.
Other areas I Be Growing
In addition to the garden area, I also have my backyard. I currently have three peach trees, a plum tree, an apple tree, an orange tree, a lemon tree, and an apricot tree growing. I have planted 5 tomato plants, some cilantro, sweet potatoes, a goldenberry, and my mesclun which are all doing well, except for the mesclun.
Look for updates on my growing area soon, as I expect a lot of transformation to occur in all these spaces.
Looks like my first tray of Mesclun has not germinated entirely. I started a new tray, and this time I am using Black Gold potting mix and have a plastic cover over the tray for a greenhouse effect. Why did this fail so bad? I am not quite sure, I think maybe it wasn’t warm enough. I am a total novice at this gardening. This is all trial and error for me.
Hopefully, my next batch will germinate a bit more. Wish me luck. If you have any tips please leave a comment below.
